12 Tips on How to Wear Shorts With Big Thighs

Updated: Aug 3

Before you know it, Summer would be around the corner. Yes, I know it’s barely above 0 degrees Celsius in Canada but I like to shop 1 or 2 seasons in advance. For those of us with big thighs, the thought of wearing shorts can be daunting. But fear not! With a little bit of effort and some styling tricks, anyone can look good in shorts, regardless of their body type.

You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘thick thighs save lives.’ Well, they’re also a pain fitting into jeans and all types of pants. If you have thicker thighs, you understand how energy-consuming it can be to fit into a pair of pants. You’re probably familiar with the hop, skip and sweat process.

In today’s blog post, I would be going over some of the best shorts to wear as someone with bigger thighs. Cute shorts are not reserved for women with a small frame and skinny thighs. There are shorts out there for any body type and you just have to find what works best for you.

Here are some tips on how to look good in shorts with big thighs:

1. Choose the right length. The length of your shorts can make a big difference in how your legs look. If your thighs are a bit bigger than you'd like, try to choose shorts that hit mid-thigh or just above the knee. Longer shorts such as Bermuda shorts are a great option.

This length will help to elongate your legs and make them look slimmer. Avoid shorts that are too short or too long, as they can make your legs look shorter and wider. Shorts that hit you right at your knee would make you look shorter so try to avoid these as well.

2. Opt for high-waisted shorts. High-waisted shorts are a great option for those with big thighs. They sit higher on the waist, which helps to elongate the legs and create a more balanced silhouette. Plus, they can help to smooth out any lumps or bumps around the midsection.

When choosing high-waisted shorts, look for styles with a wide waistband and a bit of stretch, as they will be the most flattering. High waist shorts also make your waist look smaller, making them the best option to go with if you’re headed for daytime date.

3. Stick to dark colors. Darker colours are slimming, so if you're looking to make your thighs appear smaller, opt for shorts in darker shades like black, navy, or dark green. Avoid lighter colors like white or pastels, as they can make your thighs look wider. If you do want to wear lighter colors, the best way of styling them is by pairing your shorts with a darker top to create a more balanced look.

4. Embrace patterns and prints. While solid colors can be slimming, patterns and prints can also be a great option for those with big thighs. They can help to draw attention away from your thighs and create a more balanced look. When choosing patterns and prints, look for smaller prints that aren't too busy or overwhelming.

And, as always, make sure the colors are flattering for your skin tone. If you have more of a pear shape, take attention away from your lower body by opting for a top that draws attention to your bust area instead. This trick works with skinny jeans as well.

5. Don't be afraid to accessorize. Accessories can be a great way to draw attention away from your thigh area and create a more balanced look. Try wearing a statement necklace or earrings to draw the eye upwards, especially if you have a smaller upper body.

You can also wear a pair of cute sandals to draw attention to your feet instead of your thighs. Just make sure your accessories aren't too overwhelming, as you don't want them to compete with your outfit.

6. Invest in shapewear. If you're really self-conscious about your bigger legs, investing in some shapewear can be a great option. This is a more extreme option as the point of wearing shorts is typically to feel free and comfortable. Look for shapewear shorts or tights that smooth out any lumps or bumps and create a more streamlined silhouette.

Just make sure the shapewear isn't too tight or uncomfortable, as you want to be able to enjoy your summer activities without feeling restricted. Shorts in a dark color and with a high waist are the right shorts to pull this off in.

7. Choose the right fabric. The fabric of your shorts can also make a big difference in how they look on your body. Look for fabrics with a bit of stretch, like cotton or denim with a bit of spandex, as they will be the most comfortable and flattering. If you have muscular thighs, you don’t want a clingy fabric.

Avoid fabrics that are too thin or clingy, as they can accentuate any areas you're trying to hide. Shorts with a relaxed fit are your best choice if you are trying to hide a belly while accommodating thunder thighs. If you can’t find this style of shorts, look for a pair with side slits. These are more forgiving.

8. Wear shorts with confidence. At the end of the day, the most important thing when it comes to looking good in shorts is confidence. If you feel good in what you're wearing, it will show. So don't be afraid to wear what makes you happy, regardless of your body type.

And remember, everyone has something they're self-conscious about, so don't worry too much about what other people think. A loose fit is also ideal when you’re on vacation because who wants to feel restricted on the beach?

Here are some additional tips to help you look and feel your best in shorts this summer:

9. Balance your proportions. If you have big thighs, it's important to balance your proportions by wearing a top that's not too loose or too tight. A fitted top can help to balance out your silhouette and draw attention away from your thighs.

Look for tops with interesting details like ruffles, lace, or embroidery to draw the eye upwards. Pairing your shorts with a crop top is a great idea as it helps to elongate your body by showing more skin on top.

10. Try different styles. Don't be afraid to experiment with different styles of shorts to see what works best for you. Bermuda shorts, for example, can be a great option for those with big legs as they provide more coverage and create a more streamlined look.

High-waisted or high rise shorts with a flared leg can also be a great option as they create a more balanced silhouette. You don’t have to stick to jean shorts as well. Linen shorts have a looser fit and can be more big leg-friendly. You don’t have to stick to tight shorts.

11. Choose the right shoes. The shoes you wear with your shorts can also make a big difference in how they look on your body. Avoid shoes with ankle straps or heavy details as they can make your legs look shorter and wider.

Instead, opt for shoes with a pointed toe or a wedge heel to elongate your legs. Instantly make your legs look longer, regardless of your body shape, by throwing on a pair of clear heeled sandals. High heels are an instant confident booster so feel free to add them to your shorts outfit.

12. Don't forget about sunscreen. Last but not least, don't forget about sunscreen! Nothing ruins a summer look like a painful sunburn. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and apply it liberally to all exposed skin before heading out into the sun. And don't forget to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating.
